Through the "First Friend" mentorship opportunity, ECDC pairs local volunteers with refugee families that would benefit from more assistance adjusting to their new environment.
What: Teaching or practicing English, helping look for new/improved employment, learning public transportation and the area, etc. (specific activities based on the family's needs).
When: This mentorship takes place independently of ECDC, and meetings with the refugee families often take place on evenings or weekends, making it a popular option for families or working professionals.
Time commitment: approx. 10 hours/month for 6 months
Where: mostly in Woodbridge or Alexandria, VA.
Required: Adult participants must attend an ECDC orientation and complete a background check before volunteering.
