Description

The Young Center for Immigrant Children's Rights advocates for the best interests of unaccompanied immigrant children with due regard to the child's expressed wishes, according to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

We do this work by recruiting and training volunteers to serve as Child Advocates, similar to guardian ad litems.

The Young Center originated at the Immigration Law Clinic at the University of Chicago Law School, we now have offices in Texas, New York, California, Arizona and Washington D.C. Our organization is continuing to grow, and we are excited to welcome volunteers to be a part of this important work with detained children in Northern Virginia.

Duties

We are currently recruiting Spanish-speaking volunteers to serve as Child Advocates for detained unaccompanied children.

Child Advocates meet with the children to build rapport and learn their stories, accompany them through court proceedings, and work with Young Center attorneys to advocate for the child's best interests with immigration authorities.

Qualifications

New volunteers must be available to attend our April 8-9th Child Advocate Training in Northern Virgina.

Volunteers must also speak Spanish, be 21 years old, have their own transportation, undergo a rigorous clearance process, and be willing to commit approximately one hour per week to visit with an unaccompanied child.
