Who We Are

For 35 years, Literacy Volunteers of America–Prince William (LVA-PW) has helped adults in Prince William County gain dignity, equity, and inspiration through the gift of literacy and health literacy. Our mission is to provide free instruction that helps adults read, write, speak, and listen in English so they can achieve personal and employment goals, better support their families, and participate fully in their communities. We envision a county where adults are not held back by low literacy or limited access to education or health information. Our work is guided by values of equity, inclusion, and respect for the lived experiences of our learners, many of whom face multiple barriers to opportunity. We believe literacy is essential to self-sufficiency and lasting community impact, and we collaborate with local partners to ensure our programs respond to real needs and produce measurable educational progress.

What We Do

The need for adult education services continues to grow as the county becomes more diverse. We serve adults with limited English proficiency who often encounter challenges accessing employment, healthcare, and essential services, as well as navigating government and education systems. We provide free, accessible instruction that builds practical literacy, health literacy  and employability skills—helping adult learners increase self-sufficiency, confidence, and long-term stability for themselves and their families.

Services we provide:

  • English as Second Language (ESL) - reading, writing, listening and speaking
  • English Conversation classes
  • Basic literacy for English speakers - reading and writing
  • Classes in person and online
  • One-on-one tutoring
  • Citizenship preparation
  • Computer literacy
  • Workplace Literacy/Job Readiness
  • Accent Reduction
