CASA Children’s Intervention Services is looking for volunteers! Our volunteers are appointed by the Juvenile and Domestic Relations judges to advocate for the best interests of the child in cases of abuse or neglect.

CASA volunteers are members of the community who receive extensive education and training in order to advocate for abused and neglected children – who through no fault of their own – are thrust into juvenile and domestic relations court and often, into foster care.

Volunteers work with legal and child welfare professionals, educators and service providers to ensure that judges have all the information they need to make the most well-informed decisions for each child.

Please consider giving your time to help a child in need.

The first step is to attend one of our monthly virtual information sessions to hear about the role of the advocate, the application process and the training requirements.

Are you a survivor of postpartum depression, anxiety or other perinatal mood and anxiety disorder and want to provide help and hope to new mothers and parents going through a similar experience? Or do you want to ensure all maternity patients in Virginia receive information about PMADs in hospital discharge paperwork or from their providers?

We rely extensively on a state-wide network of dedicated volunteers who are the backbone of the organization. Volunteers provide direct support to new mothers and parents and their families experiencing a difficult time in their lives AND provide behind-the-scenes support to PSVa in a variety of administrative duties. All volunteers have a positive impact on the lives of new and expectant parents and their families in Virginia. 

Training is required but required for free to volunteers through our organization.

Volunteer Artist Building Representatives (VABRs) serve as the first point of contact for visitors entering the artist buildings on the Workhouse Art Center (WAC) campus. There are six separate buildings showcasing Workhouse artists on campus, each with a unique personality. During public hours (11AM-6PM Wednesday thru Saturday and Noon-5PM on Sunday), each artist building has a resident artist “on duty,” who is responsible for opening the building, administering sales, and closing-up at the end of the day. VABRs are stationed in the gallery at the front of these buildings, welcoming visitors to the space. They are knowledgeable about what is going on at the Workhouse that day and the other programs and offerings available to visitors, in addition to having a basic understanding of our site’s history. VABRs answer visitor questions and work with the artists on duty to provide quality visitor experience support artwork sales. VABRs do not handle financial transactions.

All VABRs must attend an onsite training course prior to working shifts at the WAC. The training course will include essential information about how to do the VABR job effectively and will provide the necessary information to ensure all our volunteers are comfortable with their role and responsibilities. COMPASSIONATE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR HOSPICE PATIENTS

Capital Caring Health is seeking Prince William volunteers to provide companionship for patients and families of those in hospice care. Volunteers provide companionship, play cards, read books, prepare light meals, run errands and provide respite so the primary caregiver has an opportunity to take a breath and reenergize.

Capital Caring Health is a non-profit health care organization providing care to over 1200 patient daily in Virginia, Maryland and DC; we never turn anyone away based on inability to pay. We are committed to providing compassionate care, and our volunteers are at the core of this mission.

Capital Caring Health is seeking volunteers to visit patients facing a life limiting prognosis. Volunteers visit patients where they call home; residential homes, assisted living or nursing homes throughout Prince William County. Hospice volunteers will be fully trained and receive the support necessary to be successful. Those who speak other languages, particularly Spanish are especially needed!

Volunteers at Capital Caring Health receive orientation, background checks, ongoing education opportunities, ID badge and the opportunity to be part of an incredible team of professionals.

Must be 18 years old and have a compassionate heart. Must be available to commit 1 year of service with 6-10 volunteers hours per month.

The Maintenance and Operations Division is seeking trail monitor volunteers. Trail monitors will walk a trial, or section of trail, on a weekly basis. During their walk they will pick up litter and look for maintenance issues, such as damaged trees and hanging branches, standing water, trail washouts, etc. Trail monitors will take pictures of identified issues and report their findings to the Maintenance and Operations Division.

Some more information: We are looking for you because several of our Capital Caring Health social workers and nurses are asking for items to help with anxiety, pain, and isolation. Research shows tactile stimulation can help to "center" or refocus those in pain, those who are experiencing anxiety or those with dementia.

Sensory quilts, blankets, twiddle muffs and aprons- I can’t express how comforting these items are to patients who are in pain or anxious, we anticipate in the next few months we will see an increase in the need for these. These can be made a variety of ways and with a variety of items, creativity is endless here. 

St Thomas UMC Food Pantry needs volunteers who can do weekly food donation pickups at area grocery stores providing food donations. Donations are picked up between 8am-10am Monday-Saturday and brought back to the food pantry. This opportunity is best for someone who is able to commit to weekly pickups at the same location. If you are not able to do it weekly, but would be willing to be on our sub list we would love to have you as well! We could use several people who would be available periodically if one of our regular volunteers is unable to be there.

The primary duties for this opportunity are weekly pickups of food at the grocery store receiving area, transport it to the food pantry in your vehicle (a larger vehicle or minivan is recommended), and help unload it with the food pantry volunteers. It takes approximately 1-2 hours or less, depending on where the grocery store is and traffic, etc. You must have the ability to lift approximately 40lbs.

Guiding Eyes for the Blind is in need of volunteer puppy sitters to help provide short-term relief for puppy raisers. These essential volunteers welcome future guide dog pups-in-training into their homes and provide a safe environment when their raisers need a break or need to be away from home. Sitters provide care, love, and they support the training of puppies being raised as future guide dogs and typically sits last 3-10 days. There is no cost for the sitter—the pup will come with the necessary supplies needed from the raiser. 

Volunteer requirements:

We need essential volunteer Puppy Raisers in our NoVA South Region (Prince William & Stafford County) to care for our adorable, purpose-bred puppies during the first 14-18 months of their lives. Raisers provide the pup with the love, socialization, house manners and basic obedience they will need to succeed in guide dog training. Volunteers will meet other people who love dogs and enjoy giving to others, while learning life lessons and taking pride in knowing you’re doing something extraordinary! No previous dog experience is required, and current pet owners are welcome.

Raisers are provided with extensive support including a dedicated staff member, small group training classes, free veterinary care, an a puppy starter kit. All raisers are required to complete an application and complete pre-placement training (virtual & in-person combination) and must have a drivers license. Youth Raisers (12+) are welcome with the support of an adult who will help build their skills, drive the raiser to outings, and assist with raising responsibilities. Many of our clients are forced to choose between putting food on the table or paying their household bills. The Hunger Resource Center (HRC) helps over 650 families avoid this difficult choice each month - and stave off the perils of homelessness. 

Food Recovery Driver volunteers make routine pick-ups to rescue food from grocery stores and restaurants to help those families. Shifts are Monday-Saturday 8am-12pm. Volunteers are asked to commit to at least one shift per week for at least six months or longer. There are no evening shifts available for this role. 

Volunteers must be at least 21 years old with a valid driver’s license. Must be able to lift up to 50lbs. Ride along training with experience volunteer or staff and vehicle provided.

BECOME A MEALS ON WHEELS DRIVER
Volunteer drivers are needed to deliver noontime meals to homebound older adults Monday - Friday between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m.  (Meals are not delivered on weekends, holidays or during periods of inclement weather.)  Daily routes take about 1.5 hours to complete. Commitment can vary depending upon the volunteer’s schedule from as few as one delivery every other week up to several deliveries each week.

Independence Empowerment Center (IEC) is a Center for Independent Living as defined by the U.S. Department of Education. IEC provides services enabling adults and children with disabilities to improve the quality of their lives, determine their own lifestyle, participate in all aspects of society, and secure their human and civil rights. IEC also provides a means for consumer control and policy direction of the service delivery systems affecting people with disabilities.

Governance:  IEC is organized as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization governed by its members and a member-elected Board of Directors. Individuals on the Board serve three-year terms and (by directive) at least one-half of the Board must be comprised of people with disabilities. The Board elects officers including President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer. Formal Board activity includes an annual membership meeting, regular Board meetings and Committee work (Executive, Personnel and Finance). At the discretion of the Board President on an as needed basis, special meetings are called, or ad hoc committees formed. The Board currently meets on a bi-monthly basis on the fourth Tuesday of the month at 4:00 PM in person at IEC’s offices in Manassas or virtually. Directors and officers serve without compensation. 

Roles and Responsibilities:  The Board is the oversight body that is legally responsible for IEC’s operation. The Board has a fiduciary responsibility to provide accountability and transparency to the community by ensuring that the center is operating legally and effectively within its corporate framework. 

The Board develops policy, establishes long-range plans, attracts resources, advises the Executive Director on procedures to maintain a safe and productive work environment, and ensures financial stability. Specific responsibilities include tax filings, audits, annual reports, and insurance decisions. 

The Board hires, supervises and evaluates an Executive Director. Though the Board has oversight responsibility for IEC, it is not normally involved in its day-to-day activities. The Board communicates with staff through the Executive Director. 

In addition to the Board’s legal and fiduciary role, Board members share in other responsibilities including IEC’s growth and development. Each Board member contributes her/his unique perspectives and skill sets to direct and operate IEC effectively and efficiently, advocates for its constituents and their rights, increases IEC’s visibility in the communities it serves and maintains and develops funding sources.

Requirements and Qualifications:  IEC relies on its Board members for clear direction and long-term success and sustainability. We are looking for volleyball and basketball coaches for our upcoming summer season.  The season will start the end of June  and run until Aug 1.  Basketball teams start at age 7, in Kindergarten and run through high school.  Volleyball starts at 3rd grade and goes through high school. We will be offering VB and BB clinics two nights a week for 2 hours.  We will then be offering leagues in the fall and will need coaches for at that point.

The Institute for the Advancement of Women’s Health (IAWH) is seeking part-time small group leaders to support participants of a community-based hypertension control program, between January and June 2022. Coaches will work up to five hours each month providing program participants with support as they learn to measure their blood pressure at home, transmit twice daily blood pressure measurement readings electronically, lead a monthly, virtual group check-in and discussion, and encourage participants to reach their individual goals.

The overall program combines online learning with monthly group physical activities such as yoga, tai-chi, pilates, walks, and meditation. The program explores diet and nutrition options like plant-based and dairy-free eating, and one on one and small group support.

This position is ideal for nursing or other students, or current or retired clinicians, clinical staff or public health workers, who need or want experience working on a community-based intervention and someone looking to gain experience working for a nonprofit organization. The successful candidate will work approximately five hours per month and work directly with IAWH staff.

In Prince William County, a new case of child abuse or neglect enters the court system once every few days. When these children come from the Hispanic/Latino Community, they are at an extreme disadvantage; there are not enough Spanish speaking CASA volunteers to help ensure that these children receive the same care, and attention as other child victims of abuse.

CASA Children’s Intervention Services recruits and trains volunteers to investigate a child's situation and to advocate for the best interests of the child in court. We need your help to conserve Leopold’s Preserve!

What this work entails is walking the trails at the preserve and picking up trash, reporting any issues (like tree fall and where it occurred), and taking photos (can be with your phone or camera!) of anything you see that's interesting. This is an ongoing project and can be done any day of the week for as long you'd like based on how many hours you want to be involved. It is an independent opportunity which allows for greater volunteer flexibility in regards to schedule and ability. 

The only thing we ask is that you keep track of these issues and your time on the Trail Maintenance Log which you can access from any smart phone or internet-connected device. Whether you are a frequent participant or it is a one-time volunteer effort, it is important that you report the results.

Refugee Youth Mentoring Program

Summary

Youth Mentors are paired with ECDC-ACC’s youth clients living in suburban Maryland. Mentors assist newly arrived refugees, asylees and SIVs ages 15-24 years old with integration and adjustment to their new community. Mentors may assist mentees with educational and career goal-setting and achievement, including English language practice, identifying career pathways, understanding post-secondary educational opportunities, basic financial literacy and general social adjustment.

All mentoring activities are currently being done REMOTELY until further notice; applicants outside the DC metro area are encouraged to apply. Refugee and youth-specific mentor training is provided.

For Children's Sake is looking for loving families to open their home to children in need. FCS works with counties throughout the state of Virginia and desperately needs foster homes. In October, 2007 the Park West Lions Club became a satellite eyeglass recycling location for the Lions Eyeglass Recycling Center of Northern Virginia (LERCNOVA). Since that time, we have processed and recycled over 88,000 pairs of eyeglasses and turned them into LERCNOVA for distribution to needy individuals around the world. The Washington Nationals Youth Baseball Academy looks to nurture the development of D.C. youth into thriving members and leaders of our community. 3. RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT: Cultivate, manage and steward external partner relationships to help create and maintain connections within defined community, managing a portfolio of key stakeholders. Portfolio of relationships within assigned geography will include one or more of the following: elected
officials, key government agencies, community groups, faith-based; colleges/universities, civic, NGOs/NPOs, military organizations.

4. MISSION DELIVERY SUPPORT UNDER THE DIRECTION OF REGIONAL LEADERSHIP: Promote and facilitate opportunities across all relevant lines of service within assigned geography. Leverage social capital and relationships to expand local Red Cross mission in support of regional goals and objectives.

We need volunteers to drive to our office in Vienna, VA, pick up boxed supplies and deliver them to the shelters and schools we support.  We also need volunteers to help us with distribution events where we go to a shelter to distribute supplies to the shelter clients.

Gallery Docents play a vital role in the experience our visitors receive at the National Museum of the Marine Corps.  Gallery Docents are a highly trained set of volunteers who not only answer visitor questions but help to expand the understanding of Marine Corps history for our visitors.  Gallery Docents greet visitors, conduct specialized tours, assist with interactive exhibits and assist museum staff. 

The ideal candidate for this position need not have served in the Marine Corps or have military ties.  The chief requirement is an interest in Marine Corps history and a willingness to learn and share the story and lasting tribute to U.S. Marines--past, present, and future.

Hospitality Ambassadors serve as the welcoming face for the National Museum of the Marine Corps.  Hospitality Ambassadors greet visitors, assist with way finding and perform other special assignments. 

Candidates for this volunteer position must enjoy working with the public and have positive customer service skills.
