The Young Center for Immigrant Children's Rights advocates for the best interests of unaccompanied immigrant children with due regard to the child's expressed wishes, according to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. We do this work by recruiting and training volunteers to serve as Child Advocates, similar to guardian ad litems. Duties We are currently recruiting Spanish-speaking volunteers to serve as Child Advocates for detained unaccompanied children. Child Advocates meet with the children to spend time together, play games, build a relationship, accompany them through complicated decisions and immigration proceedings, and work with Young Center attorneys to advocate for the child's best interests with immigration authorities. Qualifications New volunteers must attend a two day training. REGISTRATION HAS NOW CLOSED FOR OUR SPRING TRAINING, but if you are interested in volunteering we are happy to add you to our contact list for our fall training. Volunteers must also speak Spanish, be at least 21 years old, undergo a clearance process, and be willing to commit approximately one hour per week to visit with an unaccompanied child.
(PLEASE NOTE: While our administrative office is located in D.C., regular weekly visits by volunteers will take place at a facility in Prince William County, near Manassas.) |
