Now in its 116th year, the national Christmas Bird Count (CBC), led by the Audubon Society, is the oldest and largest citizen science event in existence. The Nokesville count circle, sponsored by PWCA, is centered at Merrimac Farm WMA and covers a diverse landscape that captures the transition from coastal plain to piedmont ecosystem. There are three ways you can help:
- Identify and count birds in the field (beginning birders welcome). Birders join a team that covers a defined portion of the total count area. Teams meet up at 7:00am at a location within their sector. Most teams pause midday for a hot lunch at Merrimac Farm.
- Identify and count birds in your backyard, if you live in the circle boundaries;
- Prepare and/or serve food to cold, hungry birders at the Merrimac Stone House beginning at 11:00 am.
