Together we can help older adults stay connected, active, and reduce social isolation!!!

What is the Senior Center Without Walls?

Our Mission

Who We Serve?

Older adults who face barriers to accessing traditional senior centers, including those with mobility challenges, transportation limitations, health concerns, or caregiving responsibilities.

Prince William Area Agency on Aging has created a new and exciting opportunity by expanding our programs directly into neighborhoods, where we can reach significantly more older adults who currently face barriers to participation. This approach aligns with national best practices in aging services and responds directly to community feedback.

Volunteer: Bristoe Station Battlefield Heritage Park Volunteers

What is Bristoe Station?
Two battles and numerous encampments took place around Bristoe Station during the American Civil War. While small compared to other Civil War battles, the August 1862 Battle of Kettle Run and the October 1863 Battle of Bristoe Station produced hundreds of casualties that were felt from Minnesota to New York and from North Carolina to Louisiana. Evidence of people who occupied this land remains in the park's road traces, buildings, and cemeteries. It also has 2.7 miles of walking trails.

What You Can Do
Bristoe Station's primary volunteer need is for Battlefield Guides. As a guide, you lead tours of the Bristoe Station and Kettle Run battlefields during the open season May to November. You can also assist with field trips and special events. A great way to combine a love of the outdoors with a passion for Civil War history!

What to Expect After You Apply
Once your background check clears, you should expect an email from the division volunteer coordinator with a more detailed interests and availability form. Depending on the season and site needs, there may not be volunteer hours immediately available.

If you have any requirements for service hours or have any accommodation needs for volunteering, please let us know when you apply.

Volunteer: Brentsville Courthouse Historic Centre Adult Volunteers

What is Brentsville?

Established in 1820, Brentsville was the fourth county seat of Prince William County.  It survived the Civil War and Reconstruction, but not the shift of the population to the new town of Manassas By 1820, many residents had moved farther west for better farm land and the old county seat (Dumfries) was too far east for the western residents to conveniently travel. Brentsville was centrally located in Prince William County, along the major east/west road (now 619), which led from the port of Dumfries to the Shenandoah Valley. Every type of county business occurred in this courthouse, civil and criminal cases alike, for the next 70 years. In 1893, the county seat moved to Manassas, which allowed Brentsville to retain much of its 19th century character.

The 28-acre Brentsville Courthouse Historic Centre includes five historic buildings: 1822 courthouse, 1822 jail, 1880 church, 1850 farmhouse, and a one-room schoolhouse that served the young children of Brentsville from 1929 to 1944. The 1822 Williams-Dawe House is currently closed to the public as it undergoes preservation.

What You Can Do

Brentsville has a lot of space and a lot of history to talk about!  There are several flower beds throughout the site and a representative vegetable garden at the 1850 Haislip-Hall House.  Our garden volunteers can use a hand caring for plants, weeding, and watering.  If you prefer things a little more wild, our nature trail always needs cleaning and clearing of trees that can get you closer to native or invasive plants for removal.

Becoming an interpretive guide is a very people-focused visitor opportunity!  If you’re passionate about history and really like to share it with folks, this will be a rewarding position! Working with site staff, you will conduct guided tours of the historic site during special events or on regularly scheduled tour days. Guides can also help staff with activities like field trips, special tours, or other events throughout the year.

If you have any skills or interests you think would be a good fit for Brentsville that we didn’t mention, feel free to mention them when you apply!  We’re happy to find something that suits your abilities and needs as best we can.

Volunteer: Ben Lomond Historic Site Adult Volunteers

What is Ben Lomond?

Ben Lomond and its outbuildings were constructed for Benjamin Tasker Chinn in 1832. Confederate forces used the house as a hospital following the 1861 Battle of First Manassas and you can find the many signatures of Federal soldiers who occupied the property in 1862 all over the walls. Here you can smell, touch, hear, and taste history in an immersive environment. Ben Lomond isn’t just the house, it also has restored slave quarters, smokehouse, dairy, and an antique rose garden.

What You Can Do

There’s a little bit of everything for eager hands and minds to work on at Ben Lomond.  There are three different gardens, including a kitchen herb garden, the slave quarters vegetable garden, and the antique rose garden to engage with your particular interest in gardening!  If you like to weed and water, we can always use your help with all three.

Becoming an interpretive guide is a very people-focused visitor opportunity!  If you’re passionate about history and really like to share it with folks, this will be a rewarding position! Volunteer: Quantico Creek Spring Clean Up

The purpose of an outdoor town cleanup of volunteers is to benefit both the environment and the community. Removing litter and waste helps prevent pollution, protects wildlife, and keeps soil and waterways clean. Clean public spaces look better and encourage people to care for and respect their surroundings.  Volunteers learn firsthand about pollution issues and are more likely to adopt eco-friendly habits. Cleanup events bring people together, strengthen community bonds, and promote shared responsibility. This is a great opportunity to earn service hours and be proud.

Volunteer: Help Our Veterans with a Ride to their Medical Appointments!!

Volunteer Prince William is looking for dedicated volunteers who can provide transportation on weekdays for veterans and their spouse/widow(er) to local medical appointments, supermarkets, retail and houses of worship.  Volunteers pick up the client at their home, take the client to their destination then return the client home, making sure they are safely in their home before the volunteer leaves.

Volunteers must be at least 21 years old, must successfully complete a Criminal and DMV Background Check, have a valid Virginia Driver’s License, and have a vehicle liability insurance policy.  Volunteer vehicles must be kept in good working condition and seat belts must be worn by both the volunteer and client.

Please note, this opportunity is not a match for those needing court-ordered community service or who have been recommended to do community service by an attorney.

Once signed up, you can set your own schedule and drive as often as your time allows by using our online scheduling program.  By transporting veterans and their spouses, you’re allowing them to continue living independently in their own home while getting their daily and medical needs met.  And a friendly volunteer face does much to brighten up a veteran’s day!

For more information, please contact Jan Hawkins at jhawkins@volunteerpw.org.

This opportunity is made possible by a grant from the Potomac Health Foundation.

Volunteer: Calling All CAT LOVERS!!!!

Lucky Dog Animal Rescue is looking for volunteers who LOVE CATS to go to various Petsmart locations and care for our cats that live there while waiting to be adopted!  Our cats are currently housed in 3 locations:  Largo Petsmart (10464 Campus Way S, Largo, MD 20774), Oxon Hill Petsmart (6005 Oxon Hill Road Oxon Hill, MD 20745) and Rockville Petsmart (5154 Nicholson Ln, Kensington, MD 20895)

We are looking for volunteers to go once a week and help maintain the cleanliness of the cat's condos in the cat centers.  This includes scooping their litter box (or a full litter box change if needed), using the provided cleaners to sweep out and clean the condos to keep them sanitary, change out any dirty beds and toys with new fresh ones,  making sure that they have fresh water and clean bowls and general just tidying up.  It is really important that the cats are kept clean to prevent them getting sick. We also want volunteers to spend time playing with the cats and kittens so they get well socialized and handled routinely.  After your visit we ask for a visit report letting us know how the cat(s) are doing, any observations on their personality, and your interactions with them. Pictures/videos are great too!

The available hours are 9 am - 9 pm Mondays through Saturdays and 10 am - 7 pm on Sundays for Petsmart Locations. There isn't an hour requirement for this volunteer opportunity: we encourage people to sign up on a recurring basis ideally once a week.

Transform lives with Girls on the Run of Northern Virginia!

The impact of a Girls on the Run volunteer coach is as boundless as it is beautiful. So lace up your sneakers and inspire a group of participants to be strong, confident, and healthy! Teams of volunteer coaches are trained to facilitate our easy-to-follow curriculum with small groups of participants twice a week over the course of a ten week season. Volunteer: Oral History Transcription

The Lorton Prison Museum at the Workhouse Arts Center has several new oral histories that need to be transcribed. Auto-transcriptions have been generated, but it is vital that a human being listen to the oral histories and verify the auto-generated text to make corrections. This work can be time consuming and will require the volunteer to sit at a computer with headphones on for long periods of time. The content of the oral history pertains to the history of the Lorton Correctional Complex.

Basic computer skills are a must. English fluency and excellent grammar needed.

Due to the sensitive nature of the oral histories, the work must be completed on site at the Lorton Prison Museum. Work can be completed, after a training, during weekday business hours or when the museum is open on the weekends (Sat. 11AM-6PM/Sun. 12-5PM).

Volunteer: Lorton Prison Museum Docent

WHAT IS THE LORTON PRISON MUSEUM?

The Lorton Prison Museum featuring the Lucy Burns Gallery is the history museum for the Workhouse Arts Center - the former site of the Lorton Correctional Complex (or the DC Prison). LBM tells the 91 year history of the prison site, with a special focus on the Women's Suffrage Movement - as the original prison, the Occoquan Workhouse, held over 70 of the suffragists who picketed the White House in 1917. LBM has galleries dedicated to the Suffrage Movement and general prison history, along with a preserved cellblock. Learn more at www.workhousearts.org/lorton-prison-museum

WHAT IS A DOCENT?

Docents are volunteers who provide educational services for the museum visitor and are sometimes called tour guides, interpreters, and volunteer educators. The role of a docent is three-fold:

They serve as hosts, to provide a welcoming atmosphere. In many cases they are the museum’s “front-line” or main human representatives. They serve as interpreters of the museum’s galleries, helping to give the visitor a deeper understanding and appreciation of the exhibitions. Docents also assist in safeguarding the collection by a watchful presence in exhibition areas.

The interpretive or educational role of the docent is the most important and challenging aspect of the job. To be effective, a docent cannot just lecture at an audience. Docents must strive to actively involve visitors in the interpretation, giving them the tools of visual literacy. Docents should provide a broader understanding of an exhibition’s concepts and provide a context for the collections with which they are working. Docents should strive for objectivity. In their role as interpreter a docent must be careful not to force value judgment or opinions on a visitor. In addition, a docent must be sensitive to visitors’ differences – learning style, cultural backgrounds, age level, and special needs.

WHAT MAKES A GOOD DOCENT?

A sincere and genuine interest in people of all ages. A love for and excitement about learning and teaching. Attention to detail and accuracy. A sense of flexibility and cooperation. An attitude of tolerance and respect for all people’s points of view.

QUALIFICATIONS & COMMITMENTS

All docents will receive training from museum staff and current docents. After completing training, docents are expected to commit to volunteering at the Museum for two years (or longer), and to volunteer for at least two museum shifts per month (2-4 hours shifts on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays). Periodically throughout the year, docent meetings, trainings, and activities will be scheduled, and docents are expected to attend as many as possible. New docents do not have to have a museum or history background to apply. A genuine interest in the history LPM, a willingness to learn, and an interest in engaging the public is a must!

APPLY

If you are interested in being a Lorton Prison Museum docent, please sent a brief letter of intent, describing why you are interested and your background to the museum at museum@workhousearts.org. We look forward to working with you.

Volunteer: Trail Ambassador Program

Volunteering is an excellent way to connect with new people, learn new skills, and enjoy the outdoors for health and well-being. The Leopold’s Preserve Trail Ambassador Volunteer Program offers an opportunity for independent outdoor volunteering with a flexible schedule, making it an ideal role for those with busy lifestyles.

Leopold’s Preserve is a 380-acre park located near Haymarket, VA. Our trails are free to access and open to the public daily. They are enjoyed by thousands of visitors annually, including hikers, runners, dog walkers, and wildlife enthusiasts.

Trail Ambassadors assist the Park Manager in caring for the Preserve’s seven-mile trail system. Ambassadors are assigned a section (or sections depending on capacity and demand) of the trail to monitor and maintain. We ask Ambassadors to walk their section periodically and keep a record of any issues: take a picture, note the location, and provide details of any problems before reporting back to the Park Manager. Ambassadors serve as our “eyes and ears” on the trail and ensure maintenance issues are logged and completed.

Responsibilities

Walk your assigned section of the trail two or three times each month. Complete minor repair or maintenance tasks along your section of the trail including cleaning signs, trimming overhanging vegetation, and picking up small amounts of debris or litter. Immediately report any emergencies, such as a fallen tree blocking the trail. Provide friendly guidance to visitors you encounter along the trail, including answering questions about the Preserve and sharing information about our rules. After walking your section of the trail, file a report through our online portal. This will quickly alert our staff about the maintenance issues you identify.

Ready to get started? To join the Leopold’s Preserve Trail Ambassador Program, please contact us at info@whfarmfoundation.org, or call (571) 358-2098. We’ll share more details about the program and the date of our next Trail Ambassador training session. Once you’ve attended training (about 1 hour in length), you’ll be all set to monitor the trails! Learn more at https://www.leopoldspreserve.com/trail-ambassador.

We welcome both individuals and groups to join us as Trail Ambassadors. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old to participate. For volunteer groups, at least one member must be 18 or older.

Volunteer: Would you like to help DOGS and CATS get ADOPTED?

Lucky Dog Animal Rescue is looking for volunteers that would like to be Cat Adoption Coordinators!  We are a foster-based rescue in the VA, MD, DC area that pulls kittens and cats from high kill shelters across the rural south and places them in foster care to get adopted!  We need volunteers willing to train to become Dog and Cat Adoption Coordinators and help us get these wonderful animals adopted!

Interested in learning more - reach out to volunteering@luckydoganimalrescue.org and we will send you info on our next AC information session/training!

About the Adoption Coordinator (AC) role:

What is it?

Adoption Coordinators are the main advocates for our dogs and cats!  They not only work to match our animals with potential adopters, but they also serve as a critical resource to our foster parents. ACs choose the animals they want to be responsible for, ensure they are properly posted online, and discuss them with interest adopters. ACs review ALL applications that come in for those animals -- and if they are not previously pre-approved, ensure that we complete a vet check and landlord check (if applicable), conduct a phone screen, and, when needed, find a home visit volunteer.

Time Commitment?

Adoption Coordinators are one of our most important groups of volunteers.  Typically, ACs dedicate anywhere from 5-15 hours a week to Lucky Dog. Having regular access to email is super important!

Adoption Coordinators are also required to attend at least 2 adoption events per month and 1 transport per month. This is a great opportunity to meet your dogs and cats and chat with their fosters!

Training Needed?

All Adoption Coordinators go through a virtual AC training and shadow at one of our Sunday adoption events. Once they have completed that, they will go through a mentoring phase before they work on their own.

Volunteer: Calling All Dog, Puppy, Cat and Kitten FOSTERS!!!

We are Lucky Dog Animal Rescue and we save dogs and cats, puppies and kittens from high-kill shelters across the rural south and we NEED YOUR HELP. These animals must come to the DC area and they cannot escape the shelter unless we have confirmed fosters. If you would like to open your home and heart and snuggle a pup or kitty, then check out our website (Lucky Dog Animal Rescue Fosters) to complete a questionnaire.

Fosters pick up their foster animal when they arrive on transport on Saturdays, from our Sunday adoption events, or from another foster. They provide temporary housing until the animal is placed in their forever home. This can be as short as a few days, or take several weeks. Our full time fosters typically commit to housing their foster dog or cat until they find a forever home.

Lucky Dog fosters provide a loving, temporary home for their foster dog or cat, communicate regularly with the Lucky Dog team, and provide transportation for their foster animal to our Sunday adoption events at least twice a month to help get their foster dog or cat adopted! Fosters must be able provide transportation to get the foster animal to events twice a month and for any medical needs (e.g., vet visits, medicine pick up, etc.). Lucky Dog asks foster families to provide food for their foster animal: we can provide or loan you the rest. Fostering is of course temporary so if you can't keep your foster animal long-term or only for a week or two, we understand -- that's the beauty of fostering!

To apply to be a foster, please visit our website at Lucky Dog Animal Rescue Fosters!!!
