You have probably heard the term “Citizen Scientist” (or also known as “Community Scientist”) and maybe wondered “what’s the deal?”
Citizen scientists are people like you and me that participate in and contribute to scientific projects. Scientists and researchers need citizen scientists to be able to collect and analyze large amounts of data that would be impossible to do with their, often, limited staff, time limitations and resource constraints. This model also builds a stronger connection between scientists and citizens, helps citizens understand scientific research better, allows citizens to be involved in research that may be a priority to them (air quality, cancer research, insect extinction) and improves openness and reliability of research.
Join us for a conversation with Lisa Matthews, a Citizen Science Enthusiast and coordinator of Prince William “Wild Things” Safaris. Together we will explore how citizen scientists contribute to our understanding of the natural world and more, we’ll learn about current projects like Caterpillars Count! and learn how to find projects that may inspire you to become a Citizen Scientist too!
