Call to Action for 01/24/2025

Greetings, Prince William:  It's a New Year, a New Opportunity to Volunteer:  Be a Food Pick Up Driver!  The SERVE campus of NVFS' Hunger Resource Center needs Food Recovery Driver Volunteers, especially on Mondays.  Volunteers make routine pick-ups to rescue food from grocery stores and restaurants to help families in need.  Shifts are Monday-Friday, 8am-12pm.  Volunteers are asked to commit to at least one shift per week for at least six months or longer.  Volunteers must be at least 21 years old with a valid driver's license; must be able to lift up to 50lbs.  Ride along training with experienced volunteer or staff and vehicle provided.  Just one day a week can make a life-long impact on a family in need!  Please email ncannon@nvfs.org to learn more.

·  Here's a meaningful way you can help - support our veterans by giving the gift of a lift!  Volunteer Prince William's VETS program has an ongoing need for volunteers age 21+ to provide transportation to local veterans and their spouse on weekdays to medical appointments, shopping, etc.  If you're a veteran looking to connect with fellow vets or looking to fill up your day, this is a meaningful experience.  Schedules are flexible, mileage reimbursement is provided, and you'll feel great as you provide a ride, a friendly face and help this population meet their needs!  Please visit https://bit.ly/4eWwrdB for details, email jhawkins@volunteerprincewilliam.org for more information.  This opportunity is made possible by a grant from Potomac Health Foundation.

·   The winter semester for BEACON for English Language and Literacy is underway and they're still urgently recruiting a few in-person and online Evening Volunteer Teachers for the Winter semester.  One-day-a-week and two-day-a-week evening options are available at various class levels.  Evening classes meet from 7pm to 9pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays in Manassas, Manassas Park, or on Zoom.  No teaching or foreign language experience is required, and training is provided.  To learn more, sign up for a virtual information session (Jan. 28, 29 or 30) at https://bit.ly/43zEFTv or contact Seth Mazzaro at (571) 428-2524.

·   Brain Injury Services (BIS) has an ongoing need for volunteers to be PALS (Providing a Link for Survivors) for survivors of brain injury.  This is a one-to-one friendship program for brain injury survivors; the program connects BIS clients with volunteers who can help them socialize in the community and rebuild social skills through friendship.  Once a month outings for coffee, walks, chess, lunch, etc. can help a client get their life back on track following such a traumatic occurrence!  Please visit www.braininjurysvcs.org/volunteer/ for more information, email mthyen@braininjurysvcs.org or call 703.451.8881 ext. 232 to learn how you can help.

·  The recent snowstorm caught many of us off-guard, and the good folks at CRi want to make sure they're prepared for the next storm!  They're assembling their volunteer Snow Patrol, an on-call team which they can reach out to in the event that one of their group homes needs help shoveling snow or taking the necessary precautions to keep their special needs residents safe. Volunteers age 14+ are welcome, and you'll feel great as you help create a safe environment for their clients to enter and leave the home!  To be added to CRi's Snow Patrol volunteers this season, please email Shannon at volunteer@mycri.org.

·   Lace up your running shoes - Girls on The Run Northern Virginia is preparing for their Spring season March 3-May 19, and they need Volunteer Coaches age 16+ to coach teams in the greater Prince William community!  No experience needed; just a desire to support and encourage the next generation.  Must commit to 2-3 hours a week for the season with a few additional hours required for Coach Training and the GOTR NOVA season-ending 5K celebration.  Coaches receive all the tools and support they need and find that they get as much out of coaching as they give.  You'll feel awesome as you help young girls gain confidence in themselves and their abilities!  Please visit www.gotrnova.org/coach to learn more, email info@gotrnova.org for more information.
